What is a Backflow Preventer and Why Does it Matter?

Backflow is the unwanted reversal of water flow in your plumbing system.  This can contaminate your clean drinking water with dangerous substances like sewage, chemicals, and other harmful materials.

Backflow preventers are essential devices that block this reversal, safeguarding your water supply.

Types of Backflow Preventers

Choosing the right backflow preventer depends on the level of hazard posed by the cross-connection, as determined by your water authority:

  • High Hazard: Potential to introduce harmful disease-causing organisms, chemicals, or radioactive materials into the water supply. Examples include fire protection systems with antifreeze or foam solutions.
  • Low Hazard: Potential to cause aesthetic issues or degrade water quality. Examples include fire sprinkler systems with stagnant water.

5 Common Backflow Preventer Options

1. Air Gap

The most reliable prevention method. It creates a physical air space between potable and non-potable systems (think of a faucet above a sink). Protects against a wide range of hazards, including backpressure and back siphonage

2. Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB)

Protects against low or high hazards under back-siphonage only. Has a simple design with an air valve and check valve to block contaminated water.

3. Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB)

Similar to AVB but also includes spring-loaded valves, shutoff valves, and test cocks enabling field testing. Also protects against low or high hazards under back siphonage only.

4. Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA)

Mostly used for fire protection. Two spring-loaded check valves, shut-off valves, and test cocks protect against low hazards under back siphonage and back pressure.

5. Reduced Pressure Zone Assembly (RPZA)

Offers maximum protection, common in fire protection systems.Works similarly to a DCVA but adds a relief valve for extra protection, creating a reduced pressure zone and air gap.

Protects against both high and low hazards under both back pressure and back siphonage.

Do I Need a Backflow Preventer?

You likely need a backflow preventer if:

  • You have an irrigation system: Prevents chemicals and fertilizers from getting into your drinking water.
  • You have a well: Protects against groundwater contamination.
  • You’ve noticed odd changes in your water: Bad taste, strange smells, or discoloration could indicate backflow issues.

Do I Need a Plumber to Install a Backflow Preventer?

It depends on the type:

  • Air gaps: Often the easiest to install yourself, typically just under a sink.
  • Vacuum breakers: Screw-on attachments for faucets and hoses.
  • Check valves: Some are DIY-friendly, but complex systems are best left to professionals.

Important
: Building codes usually require backflow prevention devices. Older homes may need a backflow inspection and updated equipment to prevent contamination.

My Backflow Preventer is Leaking! What Should I Do?

  • A little dripping right after installation is normal. It’s the system adjusting.
  • Constant leaks could mean:
  • Debris: Clean the internal parts carefully.
  • Bad installation: Check if it’s facing the right direction and not overtightened.
  • High pressure: This is a separate plumbing issue that needs attention.
  • Worn-out parts: Replacing seals or washers often fixes things.

Not sure what to do?
If it is so, then it’s always safest to call an expert. They can diagnose the problem and make sure your backflow prevention system is working correctly to protect your water supply.
